An eight-month investigation by Alamance County deputies led to the arrest of a North Carolina woman for possible white collar crimes. The Burlington resident is accused of misappropriating just under $100,000 from an elderly woman who was under her care. The 42 year-old woman was arrested on January 20, and is facing charges of exploiting an elderly adult and a single count of financial card fraud.

Deputies involved allege that the woman abused her power of attorney over the woman's estate by using some of the funds to pay for a down payment on a car, finance payments, car insurance and her own property taxes. They also accuse the woman of fraud by using the victim's credit card.

The Alamance County Department of Social Services tipped off law enforcement to the possible exploitation of the elderly woman. The investigation led to the execution of multiple search warrants and an examination of financial records. The woman's secured bond is set at $25,000. Authorities have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming against the accused.

As a result of law enforcement's investigation, the woman in this case is facing serious charges that could lead to stiff financial penalties and possibly jail time. However, under U.S. law, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Speaking to a legal professional who is knowledgeable in the area of criminal defense may help ensure that she understands all the rights she is entitled to under the law as she confronts the accusations made against her.
